I had recently watched some of the sketching tips videos of John Muir Laws, especially about highlights, reflections, etc. This sketch of my own glasses was quite serendipitous. I had taken my glasses off briefly as we were sitting out in our backyard and noticed the really neat highlights on my glasses, reflecting the sunlight. There was also the dark and light shadows on the nose bridge, not to mention the convex reflections on the surface of the concave lenses.
Sketch: Concave & Convex
I mostly used the “narinder pen” brush with different sizes and greyscale, with some smudging. After some experimenting, settled on the “spray paint” brush to approximate the texture of the cushion on the outdoor chair. Using a whitish brush color to make the highlights pop out was something I learned from this sketch.
And here’s the 30s time-lapse from Procreate:
This took about 40 minutes (and ~220 strokes) before placing the “seal” as a way of saying I’m done. Definitely one of those formative sketches as I was both learning to sketch as well a getting used to Procreate. The only use of layers on this one is to lay down the background “cushion fabric” and go back to revise it. Still getting used to digital art!
